After breakfast we began our sightseeing by driving to the archaeological site of Epidaurus, home to the best preserved ancient theater in Greece. Our great local guide Sophia introduced us to the history & customs practiced in ancient worship & explained how theater & sport were part of that.
From Epidaurus we traveled to Mycenae. Around 1600-1200 BC Mycenae was the most important kingdom in the area we now know as Greece. Amongst its line of kings was the legendary Agamemnon, who fought in the Trojan Wars alongside pseudo-historical characters including his brother Menelaus, Achilles, Hector & Paris! On our tour we even saw what some believe to have been his tomb.
Back in Nafplion there was time for lunch before a casual walking tour of the Old Town with our tour leader Declan. As well as the waterfront & 'Friends of theGreeks Square', we learned about the history of the city & saw Syntagma (Constitution) Square, Constantine Street, the Greek equivalent to Ford's Theatre (where the first president of Greece was assassinated) & the site of the first king of Greece's palace. At the end there was gelato for everyone before free time.
In the evening we rendezvoused at the hotel then headed to a local taverna for dinner.
